It’s home turf for SCOTY Steve on ‘Taste for Yourself’ tour
After negotiating their way through the ‘joys’ of the London traffic the LACA NSMW teamheaded for Havant, in Hampshire.
There was a bigger than usual smile on the face of the team’s chef, SCOTY winner Steven Cross, as the destination was Park Community School where Steven heads up the catering team on a daily basis.
The visit to a SCOTY (School Chef Of The Year) school, Park Community school in Havant in the LACA South East of England Region, was an important opportunity to celebrate the talent and professionalism of the school catering industry. Each school day, our talented school chefs help to provide hot, healthy and nutritious meals that meet the school food standards. LACA would like to see these standards being extended to all schools, including academies and free schools. Every year, our SCOTY Finals highlight the fantastic talent in our industry. SCOTY is an excellent way of showing why all schools nationwide should be striving for a high-quality school meals service.
Steven said “We are here at my school where we want the kids to have good quality local, seasonal, ingredients being used – organic preferably. It’s really important that we teach children where their food comes from, so that they understand the processes necessary to make the quality choices they need”
Conservative PPC for Havant Alan Mak said “ Healthy school meals help children to do better in the class room, but outside the classroom as well; so I’m delighted to launch the LACA Chair’s initiative ‘Move it with LACA’ and let’s get those kids walking a million miles”
In conclusion LACA Regional Board Member Simon Gardiner said “It’s not very often that you come to a school and find chickens, but that shows you how passionate about food they are here”
